Turkish, Croatian hooligans fight after match

Vienna (AFP) – Bottles flew between Turkish and Croatian “fans” in an immigrant district of Vienna following Turkey’s stunning Euro 2008 quarter-final win on penalties on Saturday morning (Thailand time), but celebrations were otherwise more noisy than anything else.

In the Ottakring district of the capital, which has a strong Turkish and Croatian population, several hundred disappointed Croatian fans attacked celebrating Turks in a nearby street, throwing bottles at them.

Bottles and stones were also thrown at windows bearing Turkish flags.

After police intervened, closing the street, the Croatian supporters turned against the officers, pelting them with bottles and other items.

Elsewhere, the celebrations were more peaceful however, although still loud.

Turkish fans celebrated their team’s victory with a parade on a major Vienna boulevard, their cars bedecked with flags and passengers hanging out of the windows, or hopping out for some impromptu dancing on the street.

The sound of chants and blaring horns all but blurred out the sound of police sirens accompanying the convoy but no other altercations were reported.
